1. Identify the field of choice that you are really interested in.
As explained earlier, it is very important for students to identify and define their areas of interest. List the options of the field of interest and arrange them according to the level of interest.
2. Check the Program Admission Requirements
Make sure you meet the minimum requirements set for the chosen program. For SPM/ STPM graduates of the current year, the UPU Online system will only list the programs you are eligible to apply for.
3. Check Merit requirements for each program of your choice
Students can calculate the merit through the Merit Calculator on UPU Pocket. Before making a choice, it is very important to check the merit average for the field you want to apply for and compare it with the student's own merit achievement. If the student's merit is lower than the average merit of the field to be applied for then the chance of being offered a place for that field is low considering that even if you meet the set qualifications.
4. Method in Determining Program Selection
Each applicant is given the opportunity to list 12 programmes according to their choice and the system will check the order of Merit score based on 3 main criteria which are:
Admission requirements;
Number of places allocated for admission; and
Results from your Test/Interview (for interview programs only).
In cases where the student achieves the minimum or exceeds the average merit of the program of choice, break down the 12 programme options at UPU Online into the top 3 or 4 preferred fields with options at several IPTAs that offer programmes in that particular/ similar field of study.
Students need to place the programme that is considered to have the most potential based on programme requirements and merit for you to get an offer.
If your merit score is lower than the average merit of the programme at your first choice university, the chances of getting an offer are low because many applicants with a higher merit average will apply for the same program and university.
So put your first choice of programme in a university where the merit requirements is lower even if it is not your preferred university. This can increase your chances of getting an offer. In my view, getting the programme in your preferred field of study is much more important than the choice of university.
For students who are interested in applying for a programme with interview/test, make sure that the application is made during Phase 1 and that the programmes are placed in lists 1 to 4. For programmes with interview/test (Education) put it in Options 1 to 2 only. For Phase 2 Application, this programmes with interview/test are no longer available in the list of programmes for you to choose.
